This page provides a summary of the training activities undertaken by the society.


Regional Training

LSRFUR has a centralised training programme, with sessions held every 6 or so weeks in each Region. Each session has a set topic(s), agreed by the training committee prior to the season.

Members are free to attend any session in any region - the sessions will include the same content at each regional meeting.

Central Training Meetings

The society runs Central Training Meetings across the season.

All Central Meetings, other than the Annual Conference, are from 18:30 for a 19:00 start and are held at:

Internal Training Courses

Throughout the year the society runs a number of courses for Referee, Assistant Referee and Match Observer training and development.

External Training Courses

As well as ongoing training and development offered to our members, our training team also run a number of public courses throughout the year. These courses are aimed at introducing individuals and groups to the art of refereeing - and to the Society - for the benefit go the game in London and the South East.

lsrfur: take up the whistle

The purpose of this course is to encourage people to take up refereeing rugby union.

The course includes an Introduction to refereeing the 15 a-side game of rugby union. Elements of the game will be highlighted and how to referee them.

Candidates will receive a whistle, lanyard and red/yellow cards. The course includes outdoor/on-field elements so suitable clothing is required. Law books are no longer supplied, but candidates can download via their mobile phones the Laws of Rugby Union from the World Rugby website.

All candidates prior to the course should have completed the free online RFU headcase course which deals with concussion protocols. You should complete the Match Officials option shown.

Take Up The Whistle courses are presented by experienced referees and currently cost £25 p.p. Courses are held within your school or club and can be completed on a weekend morning or over two evenings.

lsrfur: Women into refereeing 

With the massive growth in Women and Girls Rugby, the number of rugby matches locally, nationally & worldwide is multiplying! Rugby Union needs to recruit more referees to facilitate ALL games. The aim of this taster session at Wimbledon RFC on 15/5/18 was to encourage females to get involved and to discover the fun and satisfaction of refereeing all types of games.

LSRFUR: Young Referees 

LSRFUR is working hard to recruit and develop the next generation of Match Officials. In this video, find out how Young Match Officials at one School have developed their on-field skills, and how refereeing has given them broader skills with which to grow and develop as individuals.
